Born to privilege but doomed to the prison of a plantation slavery for supporting Cromwell, Godfrey Landless sees no wAy out of his miserable fate but to fight on for those who are doomed to misuse and abuse. The penalties for insurrection are death or enslavement. Everything seems unattainable even the woman he loves. Prisoners of Hope a Tale of Colonial Virginia Mary Johnston 9781142280437 Books Reviews

Written in 19th century style, this book is not for everyone. However, for those overlook the flowery descriptions, it offers an exciting and romantic tale of a brave and gallant hero caught in a series of desperate situations. Written in modern style, this character could rival any super hero.
Johnston was very popular early in the 20th century. I read her "To Have and To Hold" as a teenager... and it was old then. However "Prisoners of Hope" was a new read for me. I enjoyed it very much. If you enjoy flowery but beautifully written descriptions that easily evoke an early Virginia geographical setting and if you enjoy historical persons taking a role in fiction, then you will enjoy this story. The protagonist is believeable as an injured dissenter sent from England to toil on a Virginia plantation as punishment for his religious and anti-government activities. The difficulties, espionage, and adventures that he gets embroils in are worthy of his fine character and heroism. Encounters with rebelling Indians, various indentured servants, and slaves fit the time period and the story. The style is definitely dated but the story, history, and even the descriptions of Virginia are worth your time. But you must be patient.
