"Good morning. Welcome to HELL."
Mel hates job interviews - and this one's shaping up to be the interview from Hell.
From the grumpy receptionist to the disturbingly demonic interview panel and the sleazy CEO, it seems landing her first job is the least of Mel's worries.
Can she make it out of the office alive without selling her soul?
A tiny taste of what's in store
Lilith opened the door, waiting for Mel to leave first. Mel did so, almost running into a man in a dark suit.
His coffee splashed high, yet he caught most of it in his cup. Not a spot landed on Mel - just one on the man's shoe. "Damn," he swore, swiping at it with a black handkerchief that appeared almost instantly in his hand. As he rose from his crouch, he took in Mel's attire, from her toes to her raised eyebrows.
He summoned a smile that clashed with the stormy expression in his eyes. "I don't believe I've seen you in the office before and I make it a point to know all of my staff intimately." He handed the dripping cup to Mel's haughty interviewer, who took it without a murmur, even as some of the coffee slopped onto Lilith's shoes.
He held out his hand to shake Mel's. "Luce Iblis, CEO of the HELL Corporation."
Mel gave him her fingers, in such a way that he couldn't crush them in his firm handshake.
"I'm Mel," she began.
"This is her first time here. She's being interviewed for a position here at Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation - as my executive officer," Lilith said.
Luce's eyes stared hungrily at Mel as she lowered her gaze. "Is that so? I suspect I'll be seeing a lot more of you very soon, then. I look forward to welcoming you to HELL."

Welcome to Hell Mel Goes to Hell series Volume 1 Demelza Carlton Books
I think the author must have worked in some of the same office environments that I have (smirk)....she nailed this a little too well, and the whole play on HELL for the corporation name was brilliant. Not only was it really funny though, and the satire and comparisons to corporate life well done, but the character of Mel was really sympathetic and fun to read, and really ended up being the thing to make it more than just a running gag, but a full-on intro to a fun new world and series of stories. The author's world-building was done really well too, which can be difficult in a short piece, giving us just enough to know exactly what I needed to know without giving too much away or bogging the reader down in too much detail at the front end. It makes you want to know more about the character and world without being annoyed and/or frustrated.Perfect intro to a series, and a great teaser on what's to come...
Looking forward to reading the next one!

Welcome to Hell Mel Goes to Hell series Volume 1 Demelza Carlton Books Reviews
This is the short story which begins Demelza Carton's 'Mel Goes to Hell' series, and I have to say, it's a thoroughly enjoyable and wild ride.
Ms Carlton has taken the angels and demons of mythology and transplanted them smack bang into the middle of the corporate world. where Lucifer himself is making takeover bid for the world.
It's up to Melody Angel, a temp worker, to infiltrate HELL (Offices of Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation) and investigate what is going on.
This story pokes fun at the corporate world with nearly every word. The characters are entertaining, and the premise is certainly unique. A highly recommended read and an enjoyable entree to Ms Carlton's series. This short story is free, and gives you a taste of Ms. Carton's unique writing style.
WELCOME TO HELL is an introduction to the complete novel, due out in April 2014. It's intriguing, funny, clever, and actually pretty scary, in that considering the idea of Hell as a corporation bent on controlling the people, resources, and virtually everything else on Earth doesn't seem so far-fetched these days!
Demelza Carlton is a gifted storyteller with a knack for finding the humor in even the most stressful of situations. When Mel – somewhat reticent angel Melody Angel – is sent undercover to work at the HELL Corporation to see what CEO Lucifer himself is up to, both clever humor, surprises, and nail-biting tension ensue.
Entertaining and imaginative, WELCOME TO HELL will charm and engage you!
It is a fast paced short book. I think it is more in a series form maybe?
Premise is simple and enjoyable I guess. Lucifer (Luce) is feeling stuck and bored in his hell domain and is looking for something to spice up his life. So, he decides to branch out of hell and has decided to take base on Earth. Along with his fellow demons and mistress Lilith he sets up base with his company - Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation aka (HELL) corporation. Thus, begins his amassing of souls via infiltration in various corporations, government etc. to strengthen and corrupt the innocent. To counteract the devil's meddling Angels have set up their own temp agency along with newbie angels and other archangels. Their job is to stay uncorrupted by the lure of the demons and infiltrate Hell corporation as well as keep an eye on them and report back.
Mel, is an angel and Raphael sends her as a temp to Hell Corp to apply for the job and spy for the angels. Despite her misgivings and unwillingness to do this she agrees to be a spy for the angels and work at Hell. Luce is very intrigued by Mel and wants to find out more. But, Mel on the other hand, is totally turned off my Luce's charms. She thinks he's a douche and avoids him at all point. The job is new and she's still trying to figure things out. She has realized he's Lucifer himself disguised as the CEO. The cat and mouse game has begun...
The story is short, simple, fun in a way and continues in the next book....
I tend to stick to authors I like and Demelza Carlton is one of them. I won’t be happy until I’ve read everything she has produced. There is something so skilful about the way she writes, which is at the same time raw and humorous. Mel is my kind of girl. I entered the novel thinking that the job interview scenario was real, forgetting that the title was ‘Welcome to Hell,’ and was lured into this peculiar world like a lamb to the slaughter. The presence of horns and tails on the interviewing panel was genius but took me by surprise.
I was disappointed when the last page came and went and wanted more. I’ve already bought the next installment. Even though I knew that the work was a short story before I began reading, the characterisation was amazing. Mel is plucky, brave, unfazed by the bizarre presence of demons at her job interview and also immensely entertaining. I read the ‘briefcase up the bum’ incident on Demelza Carlton’s blog and still smiled reading it again in the book.
Lucifer already reminds me of a manager I once had, all powerful, slightly menacing and incredibly lecherous. I can’t wait to see what antics he gets up to. There is something about the way that Demelza Carlton writes that is so subtly tongue in cheek; it gets me every time. It doesn’t seem to matter what sort of emotion the scene demands, she manages to make the reader dance to the author’s tune effortlessly.
I’ve never read a series about angels and demons portrayed in this way. It’s really different. The word ‘black comedy’ springs to mind but as always, Carlton is in a league of her own, carving out her own route and mesmerising the reader with her colourful, well-drawn characterisation. Demelza Carlton is a craftswoman, a literary hypnotist and I am condemned to sinking my precious time and hard-earned cash willingly into another of her addictive series.
