A young woman winds up dead in a dumpster. When a homeless man discovers the body and is immediately charged with murder, a series of unexpected events nearly bring a proud, Southern city to its knees. Sid Ellison lives a peaceful life in the Appalachian Mountains, teaching high school English and waiting for his son to be born. But then he hears about the dead girl in Durham and the primary suspect his older brother Tyrell, a man Sid gave up for dead. Sid knows that by coming home to help Tyrell, he will also have to deal with the victim’s sister, Malika Latif – a beautiful, fearless journalist who dated Sid in high school. As Sid tries to prove Tyrell’s innocence, he discovers a gang-infested underworld in which nothing is quite what it seems. Bull City moves from the gritty tobacco factories of Durham to Pakistan and finally to the inner-city streets of Boston before returning to the South for a dramatic and unexpected climax.

Bull City Stuart Albright 9781514357897 Books Reviews

Bull City was an excellent read! It is fast paced and exciting. The historical and detailed knowledge of different cities, cultures, and races was impressive and accurate. I very rarely read fiction, but thought it was well worth me switching from non-fiction to fiction for the week. Excellent book!
I don't consider myself an avid reader, so I was shocked at how quickly I finished this one! It kept my attention and the issues of love, culture, and race, are so well written. Since I've been in the area for a while I mailed a copy to my mom who's out of state so she could read about some of the local descriptions mentioned and she's enjoyed it as well.
I had high expectations for Stuart Albright's newest release, and those expectations were more than met. Picked up the book to read over a week, and finished it in two days.
Bull City is a fast-paced novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. The story centers around Sid who must go back to the city of Durham, a place where many memories resurface as Sid has gotten word of his brother. The city becomes its own character, breathing of life and playing a role in each character's life.

A quick read with a rich story, written with beautifully crafted layers. I look forward to reading more from Stuart Albright.
In my effort to read a book a week this summer, I was recommended the book Bull City. Being a native of Durham, NC aka the "Bull City" I was hesitant. Whenever some people write or speak about "The Bull City", they focus soley on the negatives of the city. Never taking the time to look and explore the rich history of the city or holistically view the city.

Well this book did not do that. I learned, I smiled, I cried, I empathized, I blushed, I did everything a good book should make a person do. As much as I want to rave about this book, I don't want to give anything away.

I implore everyone reading this post to buy the book! It is a must read for those who love the Bull City, want to read about a realistic love story and/or want to explore the concept of race relations in the United States (as seen from the author's eyes). I also love how Sid graduated from Howard University.

Enjoy, Learn, and Support this great work!
Stuart Albright's newest novel, Bull City, is firmly rooted in its setting the book could be partly seen as a love letter to gritty, dirty, Durham. Since this is my adoptive hometown, I was eager to read this locally set tale.

When Meena Latif ends up dead in a dumpster, Tye Ellison is hauled in and charged. Tye maintains that he was just searching the dumpster for food, but he's homeless, without friends or an alibi he's an easy scapegoat. When his brother, Sid, hears what is happening, he returns to his former hometown and begins investigating on his own. His investigations lead Sid deep into the world of gang violence, putting his own life in danger.

And then there's Malika. Meena's younger sister hasn't been home since she headed off to college ten years ago, but her sister's murder forces her to face the demons of her past...including Sid.

This story weaves the memories of Sid and Malika into the present-day tragedy, creating a tale rich with layers. Although the resolution felt stereotypical, the characters and the city are worth investing in. If you're looking for a stark dose of modern urban America, this novel will appeal to you.
Really enjoyed this story. It was fast paced and kept you guessing. I stayed up way too late just so I could finish the book. Well done.
