The moment Rio sees the skinny black gelding standing in the local meat man’s field, she resolves to save him. Gentle and exceptionally bred, Comet is the kind of horse Rio has always dreamed of owning - a horse to take on hacks through the vines, ride bareback at sunset, and maybe even compete in an event or two.
Comet seems too good to be true, and Rio soon suspects that his past involved more than standing around in a field…
But Rio has more to worry about than Comet. With five sisters to deal with - including Clemmie the bestselling romance novelist, Lia the ten-year-old taxidermist, and carefree Susannah who came back from her gap year with more than could fit in a suitcase - and a summer of renovating an old house complicated by the arrival of numerous guests, her family isn’t as perfect as her mum’s blog about their life in rural France suggests.
And there’s Comet, a horse with his own story, and Rio soon discovers he could change her life in ways she’d never imagined.
Except she’s not so sure she wants it to…

Comet in Summer eBook Grace Wilkinson

I very much enjoyed this book. It is about a big family with real relationships and a special horse. Rio, the main character finds a special relationship with Comet and develops maturity at the same time. A very valuable lesson for many competitive riders is contained in this book. I recommend it highly and plan to suggest it to my two very talented, riding daughters, one of whom needs this lesson very badly.

Comet in Summer eBook Grace Wilkinson Reviews

I loved the family in this story! So very realistic! This book really touched me, it is a lot deeper than you see with first glance. There is character development and insights hidden here. I highly recommend it.
This book snagged my heart. So true, so honest, so warm and tender. As a horseperson, it was pure joy to read, but the big raucous families rounded it out with such richness. Growing up like that would provide stories that would endure for generations. An absolutely wonderful summer read, though it will warm you at any time of year. Highly recommended!
It is at the end of this book that the author really finds her stride, with her descriptions of eventing in France. The impressive breadth and depth of Grace Wilkinson's experiences with horses really shines through as she explains how to "read" a horse's temperament and experience level when a rider gets on for the first time or "reads" the questions of a cross-country or stadium course.
I started off rather hesitantly with this book, partially due to the change in location compared to Wilkinson's other books, but mostly due to the large character list. The family felt overly large and many of the characters blurred together, but Wilkinson really finds Rio's voice a third of the way through and everything else comes into clarity around her. I wished for more details in her events, but having finished it I feel it's fitting that she didn't really fill them out to the sane degree as she does in her other books. One nagging crituque is that I felt like there was lots of setup for a confrontation over Comet's past. My favorite part, though, were all the beautiful little moments and scenes throughout the book.
I loved this book!! This family of six very different sisters and the setting in rural France made my heart sing! What is better than a great family, a beautiful setting and the life of a horse? Nothing!! The only thing that would have made me love this book more is if I was reading it on the beach or in rural France!!! Thanks Grace! I read everything that you write as soon as I possibly can! I did not want this one to end and I am not quite ready to start another book yet as I am still savoring this one!.
This was a bit of what I call "a sleeper". It sounded a little young for my taste and maybe rather horse typical but it turned out to be a great book! Really enjoyed how she writes about the family life and all the little life lessons she slips in. All the horse "things" were correct and she even gives vent to the fact that riding is not all about winning and that you need to develop a partnership with your animal not just "be the boss" attitude. Never been to France so the way they hold Event was way out for me! Heading to the 'puter to get another one of her books. If this one is this much fun, hopefully I will wind a nice supply for later.
Another hit from Grace Wilkinson! I loved the Loxwood series (so much that I have reread them several times... -) and when I started this book I was hooked from page 1. The characters are delightful and humourous and the main character is likeable from the beginning. As usual the horse scenes are totally realistic and as a rider you do not feel that something is left out. The story line is great, albeit surprising at times, and this book gives an insight into what it is like to be a horse owner in France - something I knew very little about. The family dynamics in this story are based on love and tolerance, and the dialogue is witty and funny. I absolutely recommend this book - but be prepared to have time enough on your hands as it is hard to put down!
